Pre-Swim Hygiene: How You Can Help Keep Our Pool Safe

Maintaining a clean and safe swimming environment is a team effort. By following some simple pre-swim checks, swimmers and parents/guardians can help reduce the risk of contamination and prevent pool closures.

Before You Swim

Before entering the water, please ensure the following:

  1. Stay home if unwell – If you or your child are experiencing diarrhoea, vomiting, or any stomach illness, wait at least 48 hours after symptoms have fully stopped before swimming (as recommended by PWTAG).
  2. Use the toilet – Encourage young children to go before entering the pool.
  3. Shower first – A quick rinse helps remove dirt and germs.
  4. Check swim nappies – For babies and toddlers, ensure nappies are clean, secure, and properly fitted.
  5. Cover open wounds – Follow guidance on skin infections to protect yourself and others.
  6. Report accidents – Inform a staff member immediately if any accident occurs. Even if it feels embarrassing, it is vital information for pool safety.
  7. Update your contact details – Stop by reception to make sure we can reach you if needed.

Skin Infections

Some skin conditions can spread quickly in warm, wet environments like swimming pools:

  • Do not swim if you have contagious infections such as impetigo, ringworm, athlete’s foot, shingles, or any open or infected wounds. Wait until the condition has fully cleared.
  • Other conditions — including verrucas, warts, cold sores, and minor abrasions — can swim if properly covered. For example, verrucas should be protected with an adhesive dressing, and footwear like sliders or flip-flops should be worn in the changing village and around poolside.

Following these guidelines protects all swimmers and helps keep the pool safe, clean, and open for everyone.
