RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, 9th Generation. Including Automated External Defibrillator & Anaphylaxis

The RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland. The NPLQ is an excellent starting point for anyone looking for a career in the leisure industry, or just to gain life skills such as CPR and First Aid. The qualification is recognised around the world, leading to potential work and travel opportunities.

NPLQ course Pre-requisites:

New candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Jump/Dive into deep water.
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds.
  • Swim 100 metres continuosly on front and back in deep water in under 2 minutes.
  • Tread water for 60 seconds.
  • Surface dive to the pool floor.
  • Climb out unaided without the steps.

Candidates should also be fluent in conversational English.


Course Content:

The NPLQ covers practical lifeguarding skills, theory, basic first aid and resuscitation. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest parts of the pool.

Training and assessment is in 3 sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.


Section 1: The Lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool and Supervision

Element 1 - The Lifeguard and the Law

Element 2 - Swimming Pool, Hazards and Control Measures

Element 3 - Swimming Pool Supervision 


Section 2: Intervention, Rescue and Emergency Action Plan

Element 1 - Intervention & Rescue

Element 2 - Rescue of a Casualty with a Suspected Spinal Injury

Element 3 - Emergency Action Plan


Section 3: CPR and First Aid

Element 1 - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Element 2 - Automated External Defibrillation

Element 3 - First Aid 

Assessment will be throughout the course with a formal assessment by an external assessor on the final day of the course. The NPLQ is awarded on successful completion of all 3 units.


Course Structure:

The NPLQ is delivered over 5 days -Monday - Friday; the assessment will be held on the Saturday between 09:00 - 12:00

Your days will be a mixture of practical and theoretical sessions.
